SEC steps up market monitoring to detect irregularities

FE Report (January 17, 2011)

The securities regulator has strengthened its market monitoring service to closely observe the 'elements' disturbing the market, officials said.

At the same time, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has asked the prime bourse Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) to submit the trade analysis of its brokerage firms.

The move comes after the recent trends that have been witnessed by the stock market, which has yet to steer clear of its panicky situation.

SEC chairman Ziaul Haque Khondker was seen present in the surveillance room at the SEC office throughout the trading session on Sunday.

An official said, the SEC chairman closely monitored the movement of the stock market.

"The commission is very much alert in detecting the disturbing elements or persons that may play a dubious role in the stock plunge," he said.

"That's why the regulator has asked the DSE to submit the trade analysis of its brokerage firms," he added.
