Probe body not getting all info from SEC

FE Report (March 01, 2011)

Khandaker Ibrahim Khaled, the chief of probe body on recent share market crash, said Monday some vested quarters are spreading rumours about their investigation process.

His comment came after the rumour of his resignation and the extension of time-frame for completing the investigation.

Mr. Khaled said he received some phone calls about the rumours relating to his resignation and also extension of time for the investigation.

"It's nothing but there are ill motivated to hamper the investigation process," Mr. Khaled told the FE.

"At the same time, the vested quarters are trying to create such a situation so that the probe body can not work with confidence," he added.

On the other hand, market sources said the regulator's support for the probe body is not up to the mark.

According to sources, the probe body apparently failed to get information regarding some particular matters from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

"The body asked for specific information from SEC. But the regulator supplied it with a bundle of five hundred pages," the source said.

When asked, a SEC official said they have no lack of sincerity, adding, "The SEC officials also have to meet the pressure of their regular duties."

However, the probe body chief ruled out the rumour, adding, "The body will complete its job within the deadline, set by the government."

The probe body, was formed on January 25 to investigate the recent share market crash that triggered street protests and vandalisms by small investors. It was given two months' time to submit its report.
