Tulsi Pati gets good response from customers

The country's first natural drink made of Tulsi leaf called 'Tulsi Pati' got good response from the customers of the city within a short period of time of its launching.

Pallibadhu Kalyan Shongstha (PBKS) and Rigs Herbs jointly introduced the natural drink which combats high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney ailments, cough and respiratory problems.

Monowara Begum, a village woman of northern Gaibandha district, developed the herbal drink two years back and has now struck a deal with Dhaka-based firm Rigs Herbs to market it across the country.

S K Humayun Kadir, deputy managing director of Rigs Group, told the FE: "It is a wonder drink which works against a lot of diseases. It can be taken like tea. People of Dhaka and Chittagong can get this drink in different chain shops like Nandan, G-Mart, Prabartana and Family World and we are talking with Agora and Swapno to keep the drink at their outlets."

"We launched our product commercially last month but within this short period chain shops, small tea stalls and some hotels are very much interested to have our product."

He said, "Now we are selling Tulsi Pati in 20-gram packets and we are going to launch 50-gram packets and pati bag like tea bag soon."

Every one gram sachet contains grained Tulsi leaves, 8.54 per cent moisture, 10.77 per cent total minerals, 4.92 per cent ash soluble in water, 2.09 per cent ash soluble in acid, 4.3 per cent crude fibre and 0.67 per cent total alkaloids.

Kadir said that his company is trying to expand the market of the drink at the village level and searching for international market.

Two experts who have helped develop Tulsi Pati said the drink has proved effective against a number of diseases.

Asstt Prof of Department of Food Technology and Nutritional Science of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University A K Obaidul Huq said, "We mainly use three types of good quality Tulsi named Krishna, Babui and Rama which we can be cultivated locally."

"The colour of Krishna Tulsi and flavour of Krishna and Babui Tulsi is excellent and nutrient composition of Krishna Tulsi is high."

Dr K M Formuzul Hoque, a former director of Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research said, "It is caffeine-free that helps lower cholesterol and high blood pressure and controls diabetes."

"It also keeps liver and kidney healthy and well, controls cough and improves respiratory health. It helps digest food quickly and combats gastrointestinal problems. Its rich anti-oxidant builds the body's immune system and reduces stress," he said.
